August Pullman was born with a severe facial deformity that has required multiple surgeries. He has spent his life attending special schools for children with disabilities, but when he enters fifth grade, his parents decide to send him to a mainstream school.
August is nervous about starting at a new school, but he is determined to be just like any other kid. He quickly makes friends with two girls, Via and Juliet, and starts to settle into his new school.
However, there are some kids at school who are not so accepting of August. They tease him and call him names, which makes him feel isolated.
With the support of his family and friends, August learns to embrace his uniqueness and ultimately finds acceptance from his classmates.
