Port placement is not major surgery. The risks and recovery time are much lower than with traditional surgery. Port placement is a minor outpatient procedure, which means you can go home the same day.
The main risk with port placement is infection. Although the risk is low, it is important to keep the area clean and dry. Another risk is that the catheter (tube) may become displaced or dislodged. If this happens, you will need to return to the hospital so that the catheter can be repositioned.
Recovery from port placement is usually quick. You may have some bruising and soreness around the incision site. You can take pain medication as needed. Most people can return to their normal activities within a day or two.
If you have any questions or concerns about port placement, be sure to talk to your doctor.
