Front matter is the information that appears in the beginning of a book before the main text. It usually includes a table of contents, a list of illustrations (if any), a list of the author's or editor's previous publications (if any), a dedication, an acknowledgments page, and/or a preface.
Back matter is the information that appears at the end of a book, after the main text. It usually includes an afterword, a bibliography, an index, and/or a glossary.
