The Lost Symbol, a limited series adaptation of Dan Brown’s 2009 novel, was canceled by NBC’s streaming service Peacock for a myriad of reasons.
Firstly, a proposed production budget was a huge hurdle for NBCUniversal. The coronavirus pandemic has caused the company to evaluate its spending, which in turn has led to the scaling back or complete abandonment of planned projects like The Lost Symbol.
Additionally, The Lost Symbol was unable to pass its “aesthetics test,” where Peacock evaluates the artistic component of a project like this. It was deemed to be “just not there”. This could refer to various problems with the story, writing, or how its visual elements would’ve been executed on-screen.
Finally, NBCUniversal decided to switch gears and focus on other projects like the Bill Cosby biopic, a revival of the horror-comedy The Munsters and another sci-fi series from Chris Matheson.
Ultimately, The Lost Symbol was a victim of NBCUniversal’s budget constraints, creative concerns and a reshuffling of its production slate.
