Speaker: Each poem contains one or more speakers. It’s important for students to identify who the speaker is and to pay close attention to what the speaker’s thoughts, feelings and words can tell the reader about the poem.
Imager: Poetry often uses vivid visuals, such as metaphors, similes and imagery, to explain basic concepts or intensified emotions. Defining the imagery and understanding how it contributes to the meaning of the poem are essential elements to understand.
Figures of Speech: Poetry often uses common figures of speech like hyperboles, irony and paradox to add a layer of symbolism or complexity to describe its message.
Theme: Students should look out for themes, such as love, loss, hope or despair, which can be used to understand the main point or message of the poem.
Tone: Tone is an important element of poetry, as it can tell the reader how the speaker views the situation he or she is describing.
