How do you make an outline for a drawing? What are some tips for making a good outline?

I usually start with a light pencil sketch to get the general idea of the composition down on paper. Once I'm happy with that, I'll start to refine the lines and add more details. I'll usually use a thicker pencil or pen for the final outline.
