Nonfiction is an umbrella term that encompasses all forms of writing that are based in facts. It includes a wide range of genres including textbooks, biographies, autobiographies, memoirs, documentaries, and historical works. Here are four of the most common types of nonfiction:
Autobiography/Biography: Autobiographies and biographies document the history and experiences of an individual life. These works often focus on the accomplishments, struggles and lessons of the person’s life.
Memoir: A memoir is similar to a biography in that it documents the history and experiences of an individual person. It often has a more personal feel, however, as it may focus more on small, everyday moments, reflections and lessons.
Textbooks: Textbooks are educational works of nonfiction that cover a variety of topics. They are used in classrooms to teach students about a given subject.
Documentaries: Documentaries are nonfiction works that tell the story of a real event, person or place. They often feature interviews, archival footage or original footage with voiceover narration.
