The most popular estimate of colors comes from the Munsell color system, which divides colors into 10 basic hues – red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, brown, black, gray, and white – and subdivides each hue into 100 steps in value, from lightest to darkest, and then again into 100 steps in chroma, from least to most saturated. This provides a total of 1,000 colors to work with!

This is a very fun question, and the answer is ... it depends! It depends on what you consider to be a color, and how it is measured.

To put it simply, there are an infinite number of colors! Here is why:

With the help of computers, mathematicians and scientists have identified an infinite range of distinct colors. This range spans the spectrum of visible light and goes beyond what the human eye can see.
Consider the concept of the color wheel which measures the relationship between different colors. A wheel typically has 12 sectors, each separated by a 30-degree angle. This wheel can go beyond just the 12 colors (including black, white and grey), to provide intermediate shades.
Then there is the concept of color space which allows you to measure the brightness and hue of a particular shade and assign it a numerical value. This means that you can measure and map out an infinitely large range of colors, each with its own numerical label.
We also know that the way a color looks in your eye will differ significantly to how it looks on a computer screen. In this context, color is subjective, and therefore is impossible to quantify. As such, the infinite number of colors is just the closest estimation of possible color combinations.
