Fariha was a famous Urdu poet, writer and intellectual who was born in British India in 1908. She was renowned for her feminist approach to Urdu literature and received several awards for her literary works.
Fariha's literary works focussed on the experience of women in society and questioned the unjustly placed restrictions on them. She wrote extensively on topics such as marriage, honour, female empowerment, and her works explored the loneliness and disorientation experienced when placed in a social, economic and political setting.
Her most famous works include "Aakhir Kyon", an acclaimed Urdu novel, and the poetry collections "Lal-o-Gul" and "Main Apna Dukh Uthaon". Her poetry was often full of emotion due to her unique style of writing about personal experiences and emotions.
Fariha was also very active in the Indian freedom movement and worked heavily as a member of the All India Women's Meeting. She was a strong supporter of the women's engagement in political movements, and she even held public meetings with women to discuss the Indian independence struggle and how to contribute to it.
Fariha passed away in 1993, but her mark on Urdu literature and the struggle for women's rights will stay with us forever.
