The poem “The Night Before Christmas” (also known as “A Visit from St. Nicholas”) was written in 1823 by Clement Clarke Moore.
Moore was a professor of Oriental and Greek Literature at New York's General Theological Seminary. He wrote the poem for his three daughters and the version published was a revised and expanded version of an earlier one he had written for his family.
Moore has been credited with introducing some of the most recognizable features of Santa Claus including his eight flying reindeer, his jolly personality and his entrance through chimneys.
The poem was later published in the Troy, New York Sentinel and on December 23, 1823 it was published nationally in the Sentinel’s sister newspaper,The Evening Post.
To this day, “The Night Before Christmas” remains one of the best-loved poems of all time. It shows the true spirit of Christmas and captures the essence of a magical night in which many children eagerly await Santa and his reindeer.
