The first social media app to be released was Six Degrees, released in 1997. Though the site was short-lived, it was the precursor of social sites like MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter.

Six Degrees was developed by Andrew Weinreich, an American internet entrepreneur. He understood early on that what people wanted was a way of connecting with each other through the internet. At its peak, the site had over 3 million users.

Six Degrees was eventually acquired by Friendster, which was then purchased by gaming company Hi5. Hi5 later sold the site's technology to Google for use in their Orkut social networking product.
