Chapter 2 of Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities is titled “The Mail” and it sets the scene for Dr. Manette’s release from prison, which had been foreshadowed in Chapter 1. In this chapter, we learn more about Dr. Manette and his journey from prison, as well as meet several more characters who will become important later in the novel.
The chapter opens with Jerry Cruncher, an eccentric messenger. He has been sent to fetch Dr. Manette from prison and bring him to the chief of spies, Mr. Lorry. Along with Jerry is an unnamed - but important - young lady who participates in the mission.
On their way to the prison, Jerry is stopped multiple times by the Revolutionary forces searching for expatriates. In order to conceal the identity of his young companion, Jerry claims she is his daughter. After a few close calls (and near-discoveries of Dr. Manette’s true identity), they successfully manage to reach the prison.
At the prison, we learn more details of Dr. Manette’s fifteen-year long imprisonment and that his daughter, Lucie, had not seen him since a very young age. We also see the doctor’s first shock and confusion as he is suddenly released from prison, and his elation as he reunites with Mr. Lorry and Lucie.
The chapter ends with Dr. Manette being taken to the distant lodgings of the Defarges and being put in a secure family setting, as Lucie and Mr. Lorry safely leave to return home.
Overall, Chapter 2 of A Tale of Two Cities introduces the dramatic plot of Dr. Manette’s release from prison and sets up the novel’s suspenseful mood. Several other characters are also introduced, such as the Defarges, who will prove to be important players in the plot.
