Covid-19 is most contagious when an infected person is exhibiting the most severe symptoms such as a high fever, difficulty breathing, a new and persistent cough and loss of smell or taste. Severely ill people are assumed to release higher levels of the virus into their environment, and therefore their close contacts are more likely to become infected.
That said, it is also important to note that people can also be contagious before they begin to show any symptoms. Studies suggest that up to 50% of people with Covid-19 have mild or no symptoms, and therefore don’t consider themselves to be ill. Being unaware of their infection, they may unknowingly spread the virus.
The best way to protect yourself from Covid-19 is to take preventive measures to minimize the chances of catching and spreading the virus. This includes washing hands regularly for at least 20 seconds, wearing face masks and diligently practising social distancing, keeping at least two meters apart from anyone who does not live in your household.
