Every year, the Academy Awards recognizes the best films of the previous year with the coveted Best Picture award. Over the years, there have been some truly great films that have been awarded this highest honor. Here are, in my opinion, the five best pictures of all time:
- "The Godfather" (1972)
Considered by many to be the greatest movie ever made, "The Godfather" is the ultimate crime drama. Featuring a stellar cast led by Marlon Brando and Al Pacino, the film tells the story of the Corleone crime family in the 1940s and 1950s. If you haven't seen it, do yourself a favor and watch it as soon as possible.
- "The Shawshank Redemption" (1994)
This classic prison drama, starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman, is an uplifting tale of hope and friendship. Based on a Stephen King novella, "The Shawshank Redemption" is one of the most popular films of all time for good reason.
- "Schindler's List" (1993)
Steven Spielberg's masterpiece tells the true story of Oskar Schindler, a German businessman who saved the lives of over a thousand Polish Jews during the Holocaust. "Schindler's List" is an incredibly powerful and emotional film, and it rightfully won the Best Picture award.
- "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" (2003)
The third and final installment in Peter Jackson's epic "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, "The Return of the King" is an amazing achievement in filmmaking. The movie concludes the story of Frodo Baggins and his quest to destroy the One Ring, and it features some of the most impressive special effects ever put on screen.
- "The Silence of the Lambs" (1991)
This gripping thriller, starring Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins, follows FBI trainee Clarice Starling as she tries to catch a serial killer known as "Buffalo Bill." "The Silence of the Lambs" is a truly suspenseful film, and it deservedly won the Best Picture award.
