The three types of cones in your eyes are the long-wavelength or L cones, the medium-wavelength or M cones and the short-wavelength or S cones.
L Cones: These cones are most sensitive to red light, but also respond to yellow, green and blue light. Most people have about 6 million L cones in both eyes.
M Cones: These cones are sensitive to green and blue light, and a little bit less sensitive to red and yellow light. Most people have about 1-2 million M cones in both eyes.
S Cones: These cones are the least sensitive to light but are the most important for seeing color, as they are only sensitive to short-wavelength blue light. Most people have about 100,000 S cones in both eyes.
Together, these different types of cones in the eyes allow us to detect a wide range of colors, as they work together to help detect the different wavelengths of visible light.
