It is always a great idea to start picking books for a first grader with the tried and true classics. For example, “Curious George” by Hans Augusto Rey, “Charlotte’s Web” by E. B. White, “The Cat in the Hat” by Dr. Seuss, “The Poky Little Puppy” by Janette Sebring Lowrey, “Goodnight Moon” by Margaret Wise Brown, “Where the Wild Things Are” by Maurice Sendak, and “Brementown Musicians” byPeter Spier are all timeless stories that hold up well with multiple readings.
In addition to these classics, there are some great introductory chapter books out right now that may be suitable for a first grader. Series such as “The Magic Tree House” by Mary Pope Osborne and “The Boxcar Children” by Gertrude Chandler Warner are great choices as they feature elementary-aged protagonists and simple, but well-developed storylines. The “Paddington” books by Michael Bond, “Mouse and Mole” by Wong Herbert Yee, and “Henry and Mudge” by Cynthia Rylant are all great choices too.
Finally, graphic novels are also a good series of books for a first grader as they often feature short stories with simple storylines and colorful illustrations that can help keep a child's attention. Two series to consider are “Big Nate” by Lincoln Peirce and “Amelia Rules” by Jimmy Gownley.
