The traditional way to get a book published, also known as “traditional publishing” involves having a literary agent or a publishing house connect you with an editor who will review and ultimately accept your book for publishing. To enter the traditional publishing world, the author must first create a manuscript, query letter, and synopsis of the book. The query letter is important as it helps the agent or publisher judge the author’s skills as a writer and gives a brief overview of the book’s content.
Once the query letter is accepted by the agent or publisher, they will decide if they want to go through with the contract and publish the author’s book. The author then gives all the copyrights to the publisher in exchange for royalties, free copies of the book, and most of the other benefits you would find in a contract.
After that, the actual process of publishing the book starts. Depending on the publishing house and genre of the book, the publishing process may take around 6 months to one year, as the book needs to go through several rounds of editing and revision. Once the editing and revision are done, the publisher will prepare the book for printing and publishing. The author must also be proactive in marketing and promoting the book.
Traditional publishing is the most reliable and time-tested way of getting a book published, but it requires a lot of work from the author. However, despite the effort, the rewards of having your book traditionally published are plentiful as you get to have your book printed in thousands of copies, distributed to various retailers and have your book sold in bookstores around.
