The Harry Potter book series ended with a lot of controversy when the two-part epilogue of the seventh installment, ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’, was released. To this day, many fans strongly dislike the epilogue and the epilogue seems to be the source of a lot of the fandom’s animosity.
The main reason why so many fans hate the epilogue is because it felt rushed and it was too idealized of a conclusion. We’re left with a version of the world that is almost too perfect for some fans’ taste and this isn’t the way an epic series of this magnitude should really be wrapping up.
Many readers also feel that the epilogue does not do justice to the important themes and leadership lessons set throughout the books. Harry Potter is a character of hope, courage and self-sacrifice and his life teaching the next generation wizarding world seemed to be disregarded by the epilogue.
The fact that it seemed to gloss over the after effects of the Battle of Hogwarts, as well as a lack of closure on the relationship between Harry, his friends and his enemies created a feeling of dissatisfaction among many fans. They felt that the epilogue was too simplistic and left too many unanswered questions.
Finally, the epilogue could’ve provided a chance to focus on the characters that were in the background throughout the series and instead J.K. Rowling focused on Harry’s family which some fans felt was unnecessary.
All in all, it seems like most fans do not feel like the epilogue was a fitting end to the Harry Potter series and that it didn’t give them any of the closure they were expecting. It also felt uninspired, like J.K. Rowling had run out of ideas and so it’s no surprise that the epilogue has been met with heavy criticism from diehard fans who wanted more from the books.
