Chapter 4 Part 2 of 1984 takes place in the dark, underground holding cell of the Ministry of Love. This part of the novel finds Winston Smith in the custody of the Thought Police, represented by O'Brien. Winston is being held without charge and without knowing when or if he will be released.
The setting of this chapter is grim and oppressive, with sparse furniture and a cement floor. This reflects the sense of hopelessness and despair that Winston feels as O'Brien interrogates him. The only light in the room comes from a narrow window high up near the ceiling, which gives the impression that Winston is being held captive in a soulless prison. The oppressive atmosphere of the room actively reinforces Winston's sense of helplessness and inevitability in the face of the Party's control over his life.
