Fifth graders learn a variety of topics in grammar. Generally, they are expected to know how to identify parts of speech such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions and interjections. They also learn how to identify verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, pronoun-antecedent agreement, construct sentences and use possessive nouns and pronouns correctly. They should understand how to write basic sentences and use sentence types such as declarative, interrogative, imperative and exclamatory.
In addition to understanding the building blocks of grammar, such as parts of speech, students often learn about more complex topics such as verb patterns, perfect verb tenses, parentheses, commas, conventions for capitalization and more. By the end of 5th grade, students should be able to read with fluency and understanding and write with clarity and detail.
