The founder of social media is difficult to pin down as it has evolved over time. It can be said that the first public social media site was Six Degrees, which was founded by Andrew Weinreich in 1997. Six Degrees went live in May 1997 and allowed users to create profiles and link with friends. It eventually closed in 2001, however, because it couldn’t survive the competition from the new ‘MySpace’.

Fast forward to 2003 and MySpace, a social networking site for musicians, was founded by Chris DeWolfe, Tom Anderson and Jon Hart. It was initially a competitor to Friendster and had some of the same features. MySpace eventually became the most popular social networking service in the United States.

In 2004, Mark Zuckerberg and his college roommates launched TheFacebook.com. In 2005, the name was changed to simply "Facebook" and upon the completion of Series A funding in the same year, its user base grew exponentially. Today, Facebook is the most popular and most visited website on the internet.

Another important social media site is YouTube, which was founded in 2005 by Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim. YouTube is a website that allows anyone to upload and watch videos, and has since become one of the most popular websites in the world.

In 2006, Twitter was founded by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone and Evan Williams, which subsequently allows users to post and interact with messages known as "tweets".

So, to sum it up - Andrew Weinreich founded Six Degrees, Chris DeWolfe, Tom Anderson and Jon Hart founded MySpace, Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook, Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim founded YouTube, and Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone and Evan Williams founded Twitter.

All of these founders had a hand in creating what can now be referred to as the "social media revolution."
