What is the English curriculum for 2nd grade?

What English is taught in 2nd grade? What topics are covered? What skills are emphasized?

I'm curious as to what others think about the English curriculum in 2nd grade. Perhaps I can get some ideas to improve my teaching!

In second grade, English is typically focused on reading comprehension and fluency, along with some basic writing skills. Students will learn how to break down and understand what they read, and will be exposed to a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts. They will also begin to work on their writing skills, learning how to organize their thoughts and put them down on paper in a clear and concise way.

In the United States, students are typically expected to learn the following concepts in 2nd grade:

-Reading: Second grade students are expected to be able to read independently and fluently. They should be able to read texts with multiple paragraphs and understand the main idea.

-Writing: Second grade students should be able to write sentences with proper grammar and punctuation. They should also be able to write simple stories.

-Math: Second grade students should be able to count to 100 and know basic addition and subtraction facts. They should also be able to identify and correctly name 2D and 3D shapes.

-Science: Second grade students should be able to describe the properties of matter and identify the phases of the Moon.

-Social Studies: Second grade students should be able to identify the parts of a map and explain the concept of a Community.
