In Book 3 Chapter 1 of a Tale of Two Cities, the action moves from rural France to the city of Paris. The chapter opens with a description of the city, which is busy and crowded. We then meet two new characters: Madame Defarge, a woman who runs a knitting shop, and her husband, who is a wine seller. The Defarges are introduced to us through the eyes of their neighbor, Widow Tu cker, who is a bit afraid of them.
At the end of the chapter, we see the first signs of the upcoming revolution, as the people of Paris start to gather in the streets and discuss the recent decision of the King to dismiss Parliament.
