When I need to brainstorm ideas for a topic, the first thing I do is sit down with a pen and paper (or open up a blank document on my computer). I then start brainstorming any and all ideas that come to mind related to the topic at hand. I don't worry about whether or not the ideas are good or make sense at this point, I just try to get as many down as possible.
Once I have a good list of ideas, I then start going through and evaluating each one. I ask myself questions like: is this a good idea? Is this something I can realistically write about? What would I need to do to make this a good article? Is there a better way to approach this topic?
As I'm evaluating and narrowing down my ideas, I also start doing some preliminary research on the topic. This helps me to get a better understanding of what has already been said on the topic, what gaps in the current conversation need to be filled, and what direction I should be headed in with my writing.
